The rise of urban agriculture in Geneva reflects a growing desire among both city dwellers and rural residents to reconnect with the natural world and embrace universal environmental values. Participatory gardening projects, supported financially by public authorities and donors, are an integral part of these socio-environmental initiatives.
However, managing urban agriculture spaces requires more than just horticultural knowledge. It demands expertise in areas such as management, communication, governance, and project coordination. Given that these initiatives often rely on the ongoing engagement of a large community, many struggle to maintain momentum over time.
To address this challenge, the Earth Focus Foundation introduces Ferme en Ville, a program led by four professionals passionate about urban agriculture and environmental awareness. The Ferme en Ville team brings together a diverse range of expertise to help create self-sustaining “third places” that can thrive through local circular economies and permanent jobs.
The program is grounded in a holistic approach to urban agriculture, focusing on four key areas of development: landscaping, food production, community engagement, and environmental education.
A catalyst
for the development
of participatory
gardening activities
Ferme en Ville advocates the bio-intensive method.
It’s a natural way of farming that produces high yields on small surfaces, and has many advantages:
– High adaptability to various locations
– No need for machinery, making it accessible to beginners and amateurs
-The ability to grow native and seasonal varieties
– Promoting the return of flora and fauna to all types of soil
For an urban ecology
Ferme en Ville offers a landscape design that responds to urban planning challenges such as the reduction of heat islands and soil sealing, while improving the quality of life in green spaces.
Cultivate by cultivating
Ferme en Ville offers a range of training programs aligned with the PER (Regional Environmental Plan), alongside events and themed workshops for gardening enthusiasts, families, and schoolchildren. These initiatives foster hands-on learning and a deeper connection to nature.
For a culture of sharing
Ferme en Ville develops quality social links that take into account the availability of everyone involved in a project. Participatory governance enables us to respond to the expectations of local stakeholders and aim for citizen ownership of the site.
